House number 185, Lipnice nad Sázavou. Švejk and his creator at work. The house is now a museum dedicated to the writer.

Welcome to the first and only Scandinavian web-site dedicated to the immortal Good Soldier Švejk and his creator Jaroslav Hašek. The full contents is available in Norwegian only, but is in the process of being translated.

These pages are now available English:

  • People lists all 564 persons referred to in the novel.
  • Places lists all geographical names referred to in the novel.
  • Map with details of the itinerary of Josef Švejk.
  • Sources has a list of links to material about Švejk and Hašek.

For more information I can recommend the comprehensive English-language Švejk Central, a site featuring material about Švejk and Hašek. The excellent Virtual museum of Jaroslav Hašek and Josef Švejk is now partly available in English and Russian.

I can also warmly recommend a visit to Lipnice nad Sázavou, the village where most of Švejk was written and where the author is buried. There is no better place to stay than at the comfortable guesthouse Česká Koruna, today run by the authors descendants.

I would like to thank the following people for help, information and inspirastion during the work on these web pages, here listed in alphabetical order: Karel Babčický, Alexandr Drbal, Pavel Gan, Richard Hašek, Hans-Peter Laqueur, Radko Pytlík, Zenny Sadlon, Sergey Soloukh and Jaroslav Šerák. I would like to thank Šerák in particluar, without his direct help and goodwill this project would never have been successful. I would also like to extend the gratitude to my employer who have kindly allowed me six months off to travel in the footsteps of Jaroslav Hašek.
