In 1921 Jaroslav Hašek commissioned his friend Josef Lada to draw the cover of The Good Soldier Švejk, which was then being published in instalments. It shows Švejk as a lean young man smoking his pipe amid a hail of grenades. This was the only drawing of his literary hero that Hašek ever saw; the familiar rotund version of the soldier had yet to emerge. Lada's new drawings first appeared more than ten months after the author's untimely death.

The drawings were accompanied by short texts written by Lada himself. They appeared regularly in the Sunday entertainment supplement of České slovo, the mouthpiece of the Czechoslovak Socialist Party (formerly the National Social Party). The publisher was Melantrich, which had also issued Lada's pre-war magazine Karikatury, where the first story about Švejk appeared on 22 May 1911.

Each of the 90 items in the series contained six drawings and seven or eight lines of text, which were described as "brief extracts from Jaroslav Hašek's book The Fates of the Good Soldier Švejk in the World War". The entries were labelled with Roman numerals. The final 28 illustrate Karel Vaněk's continuation of the novel. Because they were not reproduced in books (apart from some interwar Czech editions), they are little known.

The series began on 11 November 1923 and ran every Sunday until 2 August 1925, albeit with a few gaps. It comprised 540 drawings in total. A selection was later used in Synek's interwar editions of The Good Soldier Švejk, in many post-war Czech editions and in numerous translations, for instance those by Grete Reiner (1926), Paul Selver (1930), Cecil Parrott (1973), Kees Mercks (2025). Some of the most recent editions have however left the drawings out, amongst them the translations/editions by Antonín Brousek (2014), Zenny Sadlon (2026), and Jiří Holý (2026).

Below is an overview of the entire series, with dates and hyperlinks where available. Some entries are missing from the digitised version of České slovo held by the library of the Czech National Museum, and the exact dates of certain items are uncertain.

The list is based on that digitised version and on the 1958 republication by Květy, which contains the complete set of drawings, in a consistent order and with better image quality.
